Our Buy to Give Scheme
A couple of years ago I was talking at a workshop, explaining how passionate I was about women owning the perfect bag for them. Bags are an extension of us. They tell people who we are and what we like. They carry our necessities and our treasures. They allow us to lead full and fulfilling lives whilst wearing outfits that don’t always contain pockets (that’s my next mission by the way, watch this space!!). Then someone mentioned to me that women who escape domestic abuse situations often leave their homes with nothing. No clothes, no treasured possessions, no bag.
I knew there had to be a way to help them so I am so proud to tell you about our buy to give scheme.
There are 2 parts to it:
1 - Bag amnesty
I understand that sometimes bags multiply in the cupboard when you aren’t looking. You can’t bear to get rid of the broken bag that Great Auntie Bessie bought you for your birthday a few years ago, or decide to upgrade your tired bag for a younger model but don’t quite know what to do with the old one. If this is you, then please consider donating it to the bag amnesty. Charity shops can’t resell bags with a broken zip or ripped lining and often it isn’t financially viable to get a bag fixed. I am based in Edinburgh and am happy to meet people locally (covid dependent of course) or if you are from further afield, get in touch and I will give you my address. Once covid restrictions have lifted, I am hoping to have some drop off points across the UK but in the meantime I would really appreciate your support (and parcels).
2 - Buy to give
Every eligible Freckle + Hide handbag bought will help a victim of domestic abuse move on with their life. When you buy a bag which is part of the ‘Buy to Give’ scheme, I will refurbish one of the bags donated in the bag amnesty and donate it, on your behalf, to a local women’s shelter. The donated bags will be cleaned and repaired (some might need botox or fillers if they have had a hard life) but they will be restored to their former glory so they are something you would be proud to have on your arm. It’s a small thing, but to a woman who has lost everything it means the world.
2.5 - The planet
I know I said there were 2 steps, but this is important too. Some donated bags are past being helped and despite my best efforts, still look like they have just made it home after a particularly boozy hen weekend. In these cases, the bag is deconstructed and the usable hardware, fabric and zips removed to be incorporated into new bags and wallets. Reduce, reuse and recycle, my lovelies.
